Cowgirls Christen New Facility and 2019 Season Tonight
Every musty old sports complex we've ever been to has one thing in common with tonight's home opener for the 2019 McNeese Volleyball Cowgirls and that is it had an opening night. A first event where there was glitz and glamour and celebration and smiles and laughter in addition to a brilliant sports contest on display for fans.
And that's what's in store for us tonight in the first ever volleyball game in the brand new forty-one million dollar H&HP Complex. There's only one first time for everything so it'll be fun to be a part of the excitement. The University of Houston is the worthy opponent for tonight's inaugural game.
Get everyone together the first serve is at 6:30 pm and they're having free pizza and t-shirts for McNeese students with a valid ID while supplies last.
The Cowgirls warmed up over Labor Day weekend in the Robert Morris Hilton Invitational with a 2-1 record, recording wins over Elon and Manhattan before losing to Robert Morris. Juniors Regan Stiawalt and Keegan Nelms led McNeese in kills with 41 and 37 each.
Head Coach Ashleigh Fitzgerald rotated a dozen players through the lineups over the weekend looking for the most potent formula on the court. Kendall Kilchrist, Caitlin Sharrock and Callie Craus split time at the setter position. Kilchrist ended the weekend averaging 4.31 asp., Sharrock averaged 4.50, and Craus averaged 5.50 per set.
Angela McGownd led the team in digs while Nelms and Stiawalt added forty-two and twenty-three respectively.
The Houston Cougars come into the new arena 0-4 looking to spoil the Cowgirls shining night with their first win of the season after worthy battles with Arizona State, Texas A&M Corpus, UT-Arlington and LSU in its own Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup tournament over the weekend. Don't let their 0-4 record distract you, Houston is no lay-down opponent and they're thirsty for blood.
After tonight the Cowgirls are in Lafayette at UL for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic this weekend.
Fans unfamiliar with the location of the new complex will find it across from the Jack V. Doland Athletic Complex at McNeese.
