Olympic Boxing Team Trials in Lake Charles December 7-15
It's the most basic of all combat sports, two people usually men in almost perfect physical condition don leather padded gloves and battle each other to the finish. The finish being either time running out and one man outpointing the other, or one man getting knocked unconscious or simply senseless.
In case you're wondering Boxing dates back to about 3000 BC in Egypt as a sport to keep soldiers in tune. Leather straps were wrapped around the hands to protect the fighters hands. (ha, and you thought gloves were supposed to soften the blow to the nose!?)
Now the USA Boxing and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee have awarded the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing to Lake Charles. From December 7 through the 15th, the trials will be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center with the finals moving over to the Golden Nugget. (there is an unwritten rule since about 1985 that boxing has to take place in a casino). The thirteen ultimate finalists will advance to the 2020 qualifying events in January for the opportunity to represent the United States in Tokyo in next summers games.
This December will be the first time Lake Charles will hold the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing. Louisiana has hosted numerous boxing events throughout the years, including the National Golden Gloves tournament in 2017. Louisiana is a boxing-friendly state, and some of my relatives have been involved with Golden Gloves and even the pro-ranks. As for me, I don't mind getting hit in the face, as long as I'm wearing a football helmet and face mask.
According to Michael Campbell, USA Boxing Events Manager USA Boxing is tremendously excited to join with Lake Charles to bring the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing to the Gulf Coast, the city’s warm hospitality and Southern charm, great people, climate and culture make for a perfect for our next generation of champions and give our boxers, coaches and officials a special experience.
