A country on track to become a world exporter of oil and natural gas is going to need new modern pipeline technology in the years to come, and SOWELA is preparing now to send qualified pipeline specialists into the field.

With a donation of $1 million from TC Energy, SOWELA will build the state-of-the-art TC Energy Pipeline Academy on the campus next to the recently added Process Technology Center. TC Energy operates over 57,500 miles of nat gas pipelines and around 3,000 miles of oil pipe in the US, Mexico and Canada.

According to SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall, The creation of the TC Energy Pipeline Training Academy is a great and unique opportunity for SOWELA to partner with one of the world’s largest energy companies to provide training in a specific field that touches all aspects of the Louisiana economy. He went on to add TC Energy’s investment is yet another example of how industry and education can partner to provide a trained and skilled workforce for Louisiana and the nation. I am very excited and greatly appreciative that TC Energy has chosen SOWELA as their partner to establish the Pipeline Training Academy.

The center will operate 24/7 much like a real-world process operation. Students will complete shift-work in the Process Center, while getting hands-on experience with pipeline operations. The training facility will feature an outdoor pipeline loop structure that will familiarize and train students in real-life work environments, construction techniques, compliance, security, monitoring and repairs.

In South Louisiana the O&G Industry employs some 45,000 individuals and, job openings fill the want ads every day. The new academy will help fill a growing number of energy jobs in the region.

The SOWELA Technical Community Center provides traditional, distance and lifelong learning experiences. Awards presented upon successful completion of various curriculum include associates degrees, technical diplomas and certificates.
